Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

Transform your inner dialogue and build self-compassion

What is Compassion Focused Therapy?

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) has been developed by Professor Paul Gilbert, who found through his work delivering CBT that not all people responded well to traditional CBT approaches. Through his research, he discovered why.

What he found is that people who have high levels of shame and self-criticism may be able to alter their thinking patterns with CBT, but if their internal dialogue is harsh, it won't improve their wellbeing. This is where CFT comes in.

The Power of Self-Compassion

Developing more self-compassion is strongly correlated with improved emotional regulation and improved psychological health. CFT enhances CBT and EMDR by softening our critical inner world and improving our relationship with ourselves.

How CFT Works

CFT helps you develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself. Rather than being harsh and critical when things go wrong, you learn to treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a good friend.

The therapy focuses on:

Understanding your threat system and how it creates shame and self-criticism
Developing your soothing system to balance difficult emotions
Building compassionate ways of thinking and behaving
Learning self-compassion practices and exercises
Creating a kinder, more supportive inner voice

Who Benefits from CFT?

CFT is particularly helpful for people who:

Experience high levels of shame or self-criticism
Have a harsh inner critic
Struggle with perfectionism
Have tried CBT but found it didn't fully address their needs
Experience self-blame and guilt
Have difficulty accepting compliments or positive feedback

CFT can be used as a standalone therapy alongside Compassionate Mind Training, offering a complete therapeutic approach focused on developing self-compassion and emotional regulation.

Combining CFT with CBT and EMDR

I am trained in CBT, EMDR and CFT, which allows me to offer an integrated approach tailored to your specific needs. For many people, combining these approaches provides the most effective treatment.

CFT complements CBT beautifully by addressing the emotional warmth and self-soothing that can sometimes be missing from traditional cognitive approaches. Together, they provide both the practical skills of CBT and the emotional healing of CFT.

CFT can also be integrated with EMDR therapy, providing a compassionate framework that supports trauma processing while building emotional safety and self-soothing skills.

Research-Backed Results

Studies have shown that CFT is effective for depression, anxiety, eating disorders, psychosis, and personality difficulties. It's particularly powerful for those with complex trauma histories or high levels of self-criticism.
